One of Almeria’s claims to fame comes from the many “spaghetti westerns” that were shot in the desert of nearby Tabernas. The sets where Sergio Leone filmed such cinema classics as “A fistful of dollars ”and “The good, the bad and the ugly” which launched Clint Eastwood to stardom are still to be seen, just as they appeared on the big screen.
Mini Hollywood is well equipped to welcome visitors and each day puts on “cowboy” spectaculars and other stunts. The facilities include a zoological reserve which is famous for its collection of parrots and macaws, always popular with the children.
Open from 10-21 hours, Mini Hollywood is close to the town of Tabernas and some 24 kms from Almeria City.

Calar Alto Observatory

Centro Astronómico Hispano Alemán - Almería

The German-Spanish Astronomical Center at Calar Alto is located in the Sierra de Los Filabres (Andalucía, Southern Spain) north of Almeria (road map, 90kB Postscript). It is operated by the Max-Planck-Institut für Astronomie in Heidelberg (Germany) and provides three telescopes with apertures of 1.23m, 2.2m and 3.5m. (Historical Overview)

A 1.5m-telescope is operated under the control of the Observatory of Madrid.
